Motorcycle Safety — BIKERS CAN KEEP THEMSELVES SAFE ON THE ROAD!

Motorcycle riders love cruising along the open road and feeling the wind in their hair. We know, because at Peake & Fowler, we love to ride! But bikers also have a better chance of getting hurt or killed than the people driving cars. With only a few inches between riders and the pavement, bikers need to be careful.

We offer the safety following tips, because we want our fellow bikers to enjoy riding for many years:

  • Wear a helmet. Statistics show that helmets save lives. South Carolina law gives riders 21 years old and older the option to wear a helmet. It's a rider's choice, but understand that wearing a helmet can help prevent a serious traumatic head injury if you are in a motorcycle accident. Riders without helmets are three times more likely to die from injuries than riders who wear helmets, no matter what the speed.
  • Wear appropriate clothing. Pants, coats and gloves made of a durable material such as leather can protect your skin in the event of an accident. Leather works to protect the rider from road rash as well as the elements. You can reduce the risk of blindness by wearing goggles and face protection.
  • Check the motorcycle's tire pressure. The right amount of tire pressure allows riders to safely and easily take corners and turns.
  • Inspect the motorcycle. Look for any visible damages such as loose bolts. A quick inspection could save your life.

How Motorcycle Safety Precautions Can Save Your Life

If you take a few steps toward safety, we believe you can reduce the risk of injury or death. Motorcyclists are 27 times more likely to die in a collision than are the occupants of the other vehicle in an accident, according to studies. Bikers are five times more likely to get injured than are the passengers in the other vehicle.
